What Is Tributyrin?
Tributyrin (CAS 60-01-5; INCI Tributyrin) is a triglyceride built from one glycerol backbone and three butyric acid units. Unlike sodium butyrate salts, it is a clear, pale-yellow oily liquid rather than a hygroscopic powder — a handling profile that has made it the fastest-growing butyrate delivery form in postbiotic formulations. Commercial material is standardised to ≥99% purity by GC, with low acid value and moisture content, and is compatible with both lipid-filled capsules and oil-phase emulsion systems.

How It Works
Tributyrin’s commercial value lies in where it releases its payload. The intact triglyceride resists gastric acid and passes largely undigested into the distal small intestine and colon, where pancreatic and microbial esterases cleave it gradually. The result is sustained, site-specific butyrate release rather than the sharp proximal spike — and the characteristic rancid odour — associated with free butyrate salts.
Butyrate is the primary energy substrate for colonocytes. It also functions as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, upregulating tight-junction proteins such as occludin and ZO-1, supporting regulatory T-cell differentiation, and dampening NF-κB-driven inflammatory signalling. Because systemic low-grade inflammation is a recognised driver of barrier dysfunction in skin, this gut-level activity underpins the ingredient’s “gut-skin axis” positioning across both oral and topical formats.
Five Application Areas Driving Demand
- Gut barrier and IBS formulas — leaky-gut, bloating and post-antibiotic recovery products where tolerability beats raw potency.
- Postbiotic skincare — barrier-repair serums and creams positioned on microbiome balance without live-culture stability issues.
- Animal nutrition — antibiotic-free poultry and swine diets targeting intestinal integrity and feed conversion.
- Sports and clinical nutrition — gut-comfort protein and electrolyte systems for endurance and clinical feeding.
- Functional food and beverages — microencapsulated or spray-dried powder premixes for sachets and ready-to-mix formats.
