Bemotrizinol: The First New FDA-Approved UV Filter Powering the 2026 Sunscreen Boom

What Is Bemotrizinol?

Bemotrizinol (BEMT; INCI: Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine; CAS 187393-00-6) is a next-generation broad-spectrum organic UV filter, better known worldwide under the trade names Tinosorb® S and Parsol® Shield. In a landmark regulatory milestone, the FDA issued Final Administrative Order OTC000039 in June 2026, adding bemotrizinol to the OTC Sunscreen Monograph M020 as a GRASE (generally recognized as safe and effective) ingredient at concentrations up to 6% — the first new UV filter approved for the U.S. market since 1999.

Long used across the EU, Asia and Australia, bemotrizinol is now driving a full-scale reformulation wave in North America, with brands such as La Roche-Posay, Neutrogena and Ultra Violette launching the first BEMT-based sun care lines. Global demand is surging, and ingredient buyers are actively qualifying new supply sources.

How It Works

Bemotrizinol absorbs both UVB (280–320 nm) and UVA (320–400 nm) radiation, with absorption peaks at approximately 310 nm and 340–345 nm, delivering true broad-spectrum coverage and critical wavelength values above 370 nm when combined with avobenzone or zinc oxide. Its exceptional photostability means it does not degrade under sunlight — and it actually acts as a photostabilizer for less stable filters such as avobenzone.

With a large molecular weight above 500 Da, bemotrizinol exhibits minimal percutaneous absorption, supporting an excellent tolerability profile for sensitive and acne-prone skin. Formulas applying it stay clear on skin, avoiding the chalky white cast of mineral sunscreens.

Key Application Areas

  • High-SPF daily facial sunscreens and lightweight serum-SPF hybrids
  • Broad-spectrum body sun care — lotions, sprays, sticks and sport formulations
  • Tinted moisturizers and complexion products with SPF claims
  • Anti-aging photodamage prevention creams for UVA protection
  • Photostabilized combination systems with avobenzone, zinc oxide or other monograph filters
