What Is Squalane?
Squalane is a saturated, stable hydrocarbon derived from the hydrogenation of squalene, a lipid naturally found in human sebum. INCI: Squalane. CAS: 111-04-6. Modern cosmetic grades are almost exclusively plant-sourced—typically from olive, sugarcane, or amaranth—making it a clean-label, shark-free alternative that aligns with today’s sustainability and ethical sourcing demands.
How Does Squalane Work?
Squalane is a biomimetic emollient that integrates seamlessly with the skin’s lipid barrier. Its lightweight molecular structure forms a breathable, non-comedogenic occlusive layer that significantly reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) without leaving a greasy residue.
