What is Beta-Glucan?
Beta-glucan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the cell walls of yeast, oats, mushrooms and some bacteria. In cosmetics and nutraceuticals, the two most common sources are oat beta-glucan and yeast beta-glucan. Depending on the source and molecular weight, its INCI name is typically listed as Beta-Glucan, with CAS references such as 9012-72-0 (oat) and 9011-73-4 (yeast).
How Does It Work?
Beta-glucan binds to specific receptors on immune cells and skin fibroblasts, helping to stimulate collagen synthesis and accelerate barrier repair. Its long-chain structure forms a breathable film on the skin that locks in moisture while reducing trans-epidermal water loss.
