Product Overview
Sophorolipids are glycolipid biosurfactants produced by yeast fermentation, typically from Candida bombicola grown on a sugar and a vegetable oil. Each molecule pairs a disaccharide sophorose head with a long-chain hydroxy fatty acid tail, and the product is a mixture of lactonic and acidic congeners rather than a single compound – which is why the congener ratio matters more than any single assay figure.
Key Features
- Fermentation-derived, readily biodegradable surfactant class
- Very low critical micelle concentration – effective at low use levels
- Mild detergency profile suited to sensitive-skin and baby cleansing
- Available as aqueous liquid or paste, depending on active content
- Compatible with anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric systems in blend
- Bulk supply with congener-ratio documentation on request
How It Works
- Congener balance drives behaviour – lactonic forms are more surface-active and better foamers; acidic forms are more water-soluble and better wetting agents. The ratio is the key specification.
- pH sensitivity – the acidic congeners ionise with pH, so foaming, clarity and skin feel shift across the pH range. Confirm performance at your target pH.
- Microbial stability – aqueous sophorolipid solutions are a nutrient medium; a preservation strategy is mandatory in finished products.
- No single CAS number – the material is a congener mixture; identify it by INCI and supplier specification rather than a registry number.
Typical Applications
- Facial cleansers and gel washes
- Micellar waters and makeup removers
- Shampoo and body wash, including sulfate-free systems
- Baby and sensitive-skin cleansing
- Facial masks and clay preparations
- Industrial and household surfactant blends (separate grade)

Storage & Handling
Store in a closed container in a cool place, protected from light. Because the product is aqueous and nutrient-rich, avoid prolonged storage above 30 °C and do not leave containers open. Confirm the supplier’s recommended hold time and preservation approach before scaling up.
