Product Overview
Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (often abbreviated VC-IP) is a tetra-ester of L-ascorbic acid in which the hydroxyl groups of the enediol side of the molecule are esterified with isopalmitic acid. The result is an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative that can be formulated into the oil phase of emulsions, facial oils and anhydrous serums – systems where L-ascorbic acid itself cannot be used.
Key Features
- Oil-soluble – no aqueous pH constraint, so it can be dosed into anhydrous and W/O systems
- Far more resistant to oxidative discolouration than L-ascorbic acid in the neat state
- Liquid at room temperature; easy to incorporate into the oil phase
- Essentially odourless and colour-stable when stored correctly
- Suitable for premium skin care positioned on vitamin C
- Bulk supply with isomer and assay documentation on request
How It Works
- Esterase-dependent release – the ester is understood to be hydrolysed in skin to liberate ascorbic acid; the rate depends on the formulation and the skin, so label claims should follow your own stability and efficacy data.
- Oxidative stability trade-off – protection from oxidation is achieved by blocking the enediol; the same blocking is why the neat material is not itself a reducing agent until hydrolysed.
- Oil-phase compatibility – freely miscible with emollient esters, triglycerides and silicone alternatives; check compatibility with strongly alkaline or highly aqueous phases.
- Thermal limit – prolonged exposure above roughly 40-50 °C promotes ester hydrolysis and colour development; add in the cooling phase.
Typical Applications
- Facial oils and oil serums
- O/W and W/O emulsions positioned on vitamin C
- Anhydrous serums and ampoules
- Sun-care and after-sun emulsions
- Lip care and eye contour products
- Hair-care products targeting scalp and shine
