Product Overview
Carbomer 940 and Carbomer 980 are crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymers used as rheology modifiers and gelling agents. Supplied as a dry, fluffy powder, they are dispersed in water and then neutralised to build a clear gel. The two grades differ in viscosity and flow behaviour, so they are quoted and sampled separately rather than treated as equivalents.
Key Features
- High-thickening efficiency – low use levels produce firm, clear gels
- Two grades for different rheology targets: 940 and 980
- Compatible with a wide range of cosmetic oil phases and surfactants
- Powder form – stable in storage, long shelf life when kept dry
- Benzene-free solvent basis available, subject to grade
- Bulk supply for gel, cream and sanitizer production
How It Works
- Dispersion first, neutralisation second – the powder must be fully wetted and lump-free in water before neutraliser is added; neutralising too early produces fish-eye gels.
- Neutralisation builds viscosity – typically with sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, triethanolamine or AMP; target pH is normally in the mildly acidic to neutral range, confirmed per grade.
- Electrolyte sensitivity – viscosity falls sharply in high-salt or high-surfactant systems; compensate with grade selection or a co-thickener.
- Residual solvent matters – the polymer is manufactured in a solvent carrier, and the solvent class differs by manufacturer. Specify your permitted residual solvent limits at enquiry.
Typical Applications
- Clear aqueous gels and gel-creams
- Hand sanitizer and hydro-alcoholic gels
- O/W creams and lotions (as co-thickener and stabiliser)
- Shaving gels and after-shave balms
- Sun-care gels and sprayable emulsions
- Hair styling gels and sculpting products
- Toothpaste and oral-care gels (food-grade compliance required)

Storage & Handling
Carbomer is strongly hygroscopic. Store in the original sealed container in a dry place at room temperature, away from humidity and direct sunlight. Lumps or hard caking indicate moisture ingress – screen or reject affected material. Reseal opened containers immediately after dispensing.
