What Citicoline Is
Citicoline, also known as CDP-choline (cytidine-5′-diphosphocholine), is a nucleotide derivative present in every human cell and the rate-limiting intermediate in phosphatidylcholine synthesis. Commercial material is produced by phosphorylation of cytidine and supplied as a white, free-flowing crystalline powder with a faint characteristic odour. Key identifiers: CAS 987-78-0 (free form) and 33818-15-4 (sodium salt); INCI: Cytidine Diphosphate Choline. The standard specification is ≥99% by HPLC, freely water-soluble, and stable for 24 months in sealed containers below 25 °C. Finished-product doses typically run 250–500 mg per day.

Mechanism of Action
In the Kennedy pathway, citicoline donates both cytidine and choline moieties, driving resynthesis of phosphatidylcholine — the dominant structural phospholipid of neuronal and keratinocyte membranes. Restoring that pool improves membrane fluidity, ion-pump efficiency and receptor density, which is why the ingredient is positioned around memory, attention and nerve-cell resilience rather than generic “brain support”. After absorption, citicoline hydrolyses into cytidine and choline: the choline fraction is the direct precursor of acetylcholine, while cytidine crosses the blood-brain barrier and is re-utilised for nucleotide pools. Secondary activity includes preservation of cardiolipin in the mitochondrial membrane and reduced oxidative stress under ischaemic conditions.
In topical formulation, the same phospholipid substrate supports lamellar barrier lipids. Leave-on serums typically use 1–3% for firming and barrier-recovery claims, and the material is compatible with niacinamide and low-dose retinoids.
Five Key Application Areas
- Memory and learning supplements — capsules, tablets and stick sachets for midlife and older consumers, currently the fastest-growing sub-segment of the brain-health shelf.
- Nootropic stacks — paired with L-theanine, Rhodiola rosea or caffeine for focus and working-memory positioning.
- Healthy-ageing and neuroprotection blends — combined with CoQ10, PQQ or omega-3 for mitochondrial and cognitive-longevity concepts.
- Functional beverages and powders — water-soluble with low taste impact, suitable for RTD formats and single-serve powders.
- Beauty-from-within and topical firming — skin-elasticity capsules and 1–3% barrier serums for the skin-longevity category.
