Product Overview
Agaricus Blazei Murill (ABM) extract is a hot-water-extracted, spray-dried powder prepared from the fruiting bodies of Agaricus blazei Murill (syn. Agaricus subrufescens) — the almond mushroom known in Japan as Himematsutake and in Brazil as Cogumelo do Sol. Native to the coastal mountains of Brazil and now cultivated at scale in controlled substrate facilities in China, ABM has become one of the most in-demand immune-category mushroom ingredients after reishi, cordyceps and turkey tail. The commercial value of the extract sits in its water-soluble polysaccharide fraction — dominated by beta-(1,3)/(1,6)-D-glucans and polysaccharide–protein complexes — which is concentrated from roughly 4–8% in the dried mushroom to a standardized ≥30% polysaccharide extract powder suitable for capsules, blends, gummies and functional beverages.
Key Features
- Standardized mushroom extract — polysaccharides ≥ 30% (UV), beta-glucan levels up to 20% on request
- Produced from cultivated fruiting bodies, hot-water extraction, spray-dried — no mycelium-on-grain dilution
- Fine yellow-brown free-flowing powder, 80–100 mesh, with the characteristic mild almond odour of ABM
- Water-extract grade disperses readily in warm water, suitable for beverages, sticks and ready-to-mix formats
- Also offered as 10:1 and 20:1 concentrate ratios and as a plain whole-mushroom powder for label-clean blends
- Batch-level traceability from substrate to finished powder; COA, MSDS and heavy-metal / microbiology data per lot
How It Works
- Beta-glucan recognition: the beta-(1,3)/(1,6)-D-glucans of ABM are recognised by pattern-recognition receptors on innate immune cells (notably dectin-1 and complement receptor 3), which is the mechanistic basis for their role in macrophage, dendritic-cell and natural-killer-cell activity in the published immunochemistry literature.
- Polysaccharide–protein complexes: beyond plain glucans, ABM is a source of polysaccharide–protein and polysaccharide–peptide complexes (such as the well-studied ABM fractions), which are considered co-responsible for the mushroom’s immune-modulating profile.
- Concentration matters: dried fruiting bodies contain only a few percent of hot-water-soluble polysaccharides; standardized extraction is what makes a meaningful serving size practical in a capsule, gummy or stick format.
- Antioxidant & metabolic support: ABM contributes ergosterol derivatives, phenolic compounds and dietary fibre, supporting the antioxidant and gut-fibre positioning of modern mushroom blends.
- Topical relevance: in cosmetics, mushroom beta-glucans act as film-forming humectants and soothing agents, supporting barrier-comfort claims in skin-care emulsions and masks.
Typical Applications
- Dietary supplements: immune-support capsules and tablets, mushroom complex blends, single-ingredient ABM capsules, gummies and softgels
- Powdered formats: mushroom powder blends, ready-to-mix sticks, mushroom coffee and cocoa systems, greens-and-mushroom superfood blends
- Functional foods & beverages: fortified beverages, soups and broths, nutrition bars, protein and meal-replacement systems
- Pet nutrition: immune and healthy-ageing supplements for dogs and cats, often paired with reishi and turkey tail extracts
- Cosmetics & personal care: soothing and moisturizing skin-care formulations using the beta-glucan fraction of the extract
- OEM / ODM: finished capsules, gummies and blend sticks developed and private-labelled to buyer specification

Formulation Notes
- The beta-glucan fraction is a high-molecular-weight hydrocolloid: it hydrates rather than truly dissolves. Pre-hydrate in warm water (50–60 °C) under moderate shear before adding to beverage bases to avoid fish-eye formation.
- In capsule and tablet work, ABM extract powder blends readily with reishi, cordyceps, maitake and turkey tail extracts; typical mushroom-complex servings pair 150–250 mg of each extract per capsule.
- For gummies and RTM powders, choose the 100-mesh grade for smooth texture; the standard 80-mesh grade performs well in capsules and blends.
- ABM carries a characteristic savory-almond taste — at beverage use levels above ~0.5% pair it with cocoa, coffee or vanilla systems for best flavour balance.
- Confirm the regulatory status of ABM in your target market before finalizing claims: it is an established traditional ingredient in Japan, Korea and Brazil, while EU novel-food treatment should be verified case by case.
Storage & Handling
Store in the original, tightly closed packaging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, protected from moisture, direct sunlight and strong odours. Recommended storage temperature is 5–25 °C with relative humidity below 65%. The powder is hygroscopic — reseal partly used containers promptly. Handle with standard personal protective equipment (gloves, eye protection, dust mask); avoid generating airborne dust during transfer.
