Product Overview
Carbomer 940 is a synthetic high-molecular-weight, cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymer supplied as a fine white fluffy powder. It is one of the most widely used rheology modifiers in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals: after dispersion in water and neutralization, it builds crystal-clear, high-viscosity, non-drip gels at very low use levels. VeraVitabio supplies Carbomer 940 to USP/EP grade specifications for personal-care and pharmaceutical formulators worldwide.
Key Features
- High viscosity at low concentration — efficient thickening typically at 0.2–1.0% use level
- Short-flow (non-drip) rheology with excellent suspending power for particles and droplets
- Forms sparkling clear water or hydro-alcoholic gels after neutralization
- Viscosity performance is largely unaffected by temperature
- USP/EP grade supply — batch documentation (COA, MSDS) available on request
How It Works
- Dry Carbomer 940 is a tightly coiled acidic polymer; once dispersed in water it hydrates and begins to uncoil
- Neutralization with a base such as NaOH, KOH or triethanolamine deprotonates the carboxylic acid groups
- The negatively charged chains repel one another and uncoil into a swollen, three-dimensional gel network
- The result is a clear, yield-stress, shear-thinning gel that suspends solids and stabilizes emulsions
Typical Applications
- Hair styling gels and styling creams
- Hydro-alcoholic hand sanitizer gels and aloe vera gels
- Moisturizing gels, sunscreen lotions and after-shave products
- Pharmaceutical gels, ointments and ultrasound / massage gel
- Cleansing creams and skin-freshening lotions
- Suspension systems for actives and insoluble particulates

Storage & Handling
Store in a cool, dry place below 25 °C, protected from light and moisture. Carbomer powder is hygroscopic — keep the container tightly sealed when not in use; moisture uptake can cause caking and viscosity loss. Avoid prolonged high-shear mixing after neutralization.
